THE FUTURE OF THE THAI RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKET IS GROWING BRIGHTER

The future of renewable energy in Thailand is steadily advancing and the country has now established itself as ASEAN’s prime energy hub. It is one of the first countries in the region to adopt an action plan to promote sustainable energy production while actively encouraging alternative energy investment.

Thailand is now one of the most progressive countries for energy sources in Asia. The country has the aim of sharing renewable energy for electricity, heat and biofuels by up to 40% of the country’s production. All this is projected to be accomplished by the year 2036. The Kingdom is already the leader in solar and wind power in Southeast Asia.

In order to strengthen Thailand’s long-term energy security and global economic competitiveness the country is firmly committed to developing alternative energy capabilities. This policy emerged at the national level as the Alternative Energy and Development Plan (AEDP), a 10 year initiative (2012-2021) to better diversify and build a more sustainable energy sector. The breakdown of the sources is as follows - solar, wind, hydro-power, bio-energy (biomass, bio-gas, MSW), biofuels (ethanol, bio-diesel, new alternative diesel fuel, and new energy sources (tidal, geothermal).

The target will mean the country’s total renewable power-generating capacity will be 40,000 megawatts (MW) by 2036. This will necessitate a true national effort with greater participation in new projects by private firms, aside from state utilities. As the region’s renewable energy leader, Thailand presents a huge business opportunity which is why RENEWABLE ENERGY 2019 (REA) is such an important part of your marketing plan.

GREAT DEMAND FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES

Thailand has a 20-year Energy Efficiency Development Plan (EEDP) which has been formulated to reduce energy usage 30% by 2036. The country offers an increasing number of market opportunities for suppliers of Energy efficiency (EE) technologies, products and services.

Nowadays the use of energy-saving products has become widespread, resulting in an increasing demand for related technologies. Businesses are seeking to minimize energy costs and maximize energy efficiency. This can be done by using energy-saving technologies and enhancing the efficiency of energy management in buildings and factories.

According to the EEP 2015, Thailand’s long-term energy plan sets a target reduction of 89,672 electricity consumption units, or around 300 billion Thai Baht, by 2039.  Today energy demand in Thailand is increasing and depends more and more on imports due to limited domestic energy sources and expanding home residents, retail and commercials buildings and industrial estates. This is why Energy Efficiency (EE) plays such an important role in strengthening energy security, lowering household, Industrial, commercial expenses and reducing import and trade deficits which add to overall country competitiveness.

So far ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXPO 2019 (EE) has already attracted major local and international attention from companies and manufacturers in the industry. With the Energy Efficiency Plan and foreseen market development, all bodes well for EE2019 which offers top business opportunities for companies and manufacturers of energy saving technologies and equipment. The 2019 is shaping up to be one of the most important exhibitions and a must-exhibit-show all in the business.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY: THAILAND’S PRIORITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES

The total market size of the environmental technology industry in Thailand is estimated to be USD6.2 billion by 2018. The public sector contributes approximately 40 percent of market share while the private sector contributes about 60%. The average market growth rate is 6-10% per year.

Thailand's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement of 20% emission reductions from business as usual will be met by 2030. Thailand has translated these international commitments into national policy. The climate actions will help accomplish the national goal, outlined in the Energy Efficiency Plan, of reducing energy intensity by 30 per cent by 2036; as well as the comprehensive Climate Change Masterplan which lays out commitments through 2050.

Thailand will encourage the country’s housing and construction markets to move towards greener standards by initiating national green building specifications. This trend portends continued growth throughout the country, where demand for water, sanitation, waste treatment, recycling and pollution mitigation will be areas with a continuous increment. This formidable growth represents outstanding business opportunities for companies in the environmental protection technology sector.

The environmental equipment market can be divided into three major sub-sectors: the water treatment share is about 50% of the market; the solid waste treatment equipment and air pollution control equipment shares of the market are 30% and 20% respectively. ENTECH POLLUTECH ASIA 2019 (EPA) is the leading technology showcase on environmental management and pollution control technologies. The show is now the largest exhibition of its kind in Thailand. This exciting market prospect will make EPA 2019 a must exhibit event.

THE FUTURE OF THAILAND’S E-MOBILITY STARTS HERE

Under the Energy Conservation Plan for 2015-2029 (EEP2015), the Thai Ministry of Energy aims to have 1.2 million electric vehicles on the road by 2036 including 690 charging stations. The Energy Conservation Promotion Fund encourages research and development of technology for energy storage systems.  The government is also offering support to help develop basic infrastructure, smart-charging and vehicle-to-grid systems.

The Thai government has targeted the EV industry as part of its national development strategy. It also expects that investment and production of electric vehicles will be in full swing within five years and domestic and overseas sales are on target to reach 30 per cent within 10 years - an 85% increase in EV registrations every year for the next 20 years.

The domestic EV industry is still immature and needs to deepen its expertise, while building the infrastructure necessary to support a new mode of transport and develop the sector’s supply chain. The growing EV market is also opening up business opportunities for other industries in the energy sector. This includes power plants, EV charging stations, and battery enhancement operations. ELECTRIC VEHICLE ASIA 2019 (EVA) presents a business platform for companies in the industry to benefit from being one of the first-movers into the Thai EV market. The exhibition has become a regional meeting point for network parties and partners from government and private sectors as well as trade partners, researchers, policy makers and entrepreneurs from both Thailand and foreign countries. All will help to develop the electric vehicle industry in the years ahead.
